Searching for Alternative Interpretations
PhD Student
I am a PhD student at Brite Divinity School. My primary area of study is Hebrew Bible, particularly womanist interpretative hermeneutics.
A womanist is Black women who claims the term. Womanism involves critical social theory, ethical analyses, theological discussions and claims, and biblical interpretation, among other forms. As a white man, I believe that centering how Black women understand the world is critical for the fight against oppression. Therefore, I choose to study their work and center Black women in my own attempts to dismantle systems of oppression.
Unlearning Childhood
Two PhD students, Josh and Abigael, take a walk through their childhood, how their beliefs have changed, and how they continue to understand the world differently in light of current events and their research. Josh is getting his PhD in biblical interpretation, Abigael is getting their PhD in biology.
